My Experience With PhotoLab
I purchased DxO Photolab 6 Elite in 2022 during the DxO Black Friday sale. I did this for the purpose of having access to the new DXO Prime XD at the time for denoising. While attending a Nikon NPS event, professional wildlife photographer Brad Hill spoke to how he had switched from Topaz Denoise AI to DXO Prime XD for denoising. His head to head comparison showed that DXO Prime XD did a better job.
At the time DXO Prime XD was only available in DXO PhotoLab 6 Elite however it is now included in DxO PureRAW with the newer V5 of PureRAW using the DeepPRIME XD3 engine which is far superior to the original Prime XD. That’s a real bonus for those of you using a different software editor. Now you can get the best in class noise reduction software without having to purchase and learn an entirely new editing suite.
Significant improvements and feature rich additions have been developed every year and 2025 was no exception with the release of DxO PhotoLab 9 Elite. Things change quickly in this world of software at DxO.
If you’re wondering if it is worth upgrading your current version to PhotoLab to V9 below is a brief summary of the major feature changes as each version has evolved.

If you have not tried it, I recommend downloading the DXO PhotoLab 9 Free Trial to take it for a test drive.
RECOMMENDATION
DXO Photolab 9 is an outstanding image editor and if you are using a previous version before v8 the upgrade is worth the money just to get the newest DeepPRIME XD3, it’s that good. DxO Photolab 8 users have a tougher decision to make if noise reduction is your primary focus because DeepPRIME XD2 which is included in DxO Photolab v8 already does a very good job.
I recommend you download the free trial of PhotoLab 9 to run a comparison between the DeepPrime XD2 in v8 and DeepPrime XD3 in V9 on your own style of images to see if the output is worth the upgrade.
If you use a different editing software such as Lightroom, Photoshop, etc. I would purchase DxO PureRAW5 as my noise reduction software as it already includes the DeepPRIME XD3 engine and it improves on the noise reduction included in the Adobe software.

DeepPRIME XD3 noise reduction is included in DxO PureRAW 5 and as stated above I believe it is the best noise reduction software available.
DxO Pure Raw 5 is the first step in my wildlife photography editing workflow for good reason. It does a fantastic job of cleaning up the image exactly where it is needed to be so that I can quickly and easily add any final touch up edits and get the image posted to my Coolwildlife image gallery.
