Helpful Hints In Choosing a Wildlife Print

Choosing a wildlife print is not as simple as it sounds, there are many questions to be answered.  Which print should I choose? What size of print should I choose? Should I do a fine art print, canvas, acrylic or metal?  I thought it would be helpful to share with you a few helpful insights that might help you make your decision.

1. Buy A Wildlife Print That You Like.

How many times have you been in a store and seen something you really like only to have someone or something talk you in to purchasing something else.  You likely regretted afterwards right?  Wildlife prints usually speak to us for some reason, they are a way to bring your passion for nature in to your home or office.  And quite often the piece that calls to you takes you instantly back to a pleasant memory from one of your own experiences.  Perhaps you just have a fondness for a particular bird or animal.  Whatever the reason I strongly urge you to go with your gut and chose the wildlife print that spoke to you in the first place, you’ll avoid buyer remorse that way.

2. When It Comes To Wildlife Prints – Size Matters

The size of the wildlife print you choose is best determined by the space you intend to place the print in and a few simple calculations are the most foolproof way to determine the size of print you’ll need. The following steps will give you a range of measurements for determining the best size for your location.

  • Measure the length and width of your available wall space. Available wall space refers to the blank area you want to fill, not covered by furniture, molding, and so on.
  • Mul

erstiply the width by .57 and .75.

  • Multiply the length by .57 and .75.

The width and length of the wildlife print you choose should measure within the range of these calculations. If that sounds overly complicated, eyeball it and choose a print that will cover 2/3 to 3/4 of your wall.  Below is an example to help provide you with a visual of what I’m talking about.  Most people would agree that the larger print works better visually.

3. Canvas, Fine Art Print, Acrylic or Metal?

The choice of what medium to print on will depend on a number of factors such as personal preference, budget, how colourful the wildlife print you chose is and what style of home or office you have.

  • Canvas Prints are probably the most versatile type of print, they fit in just about anywhere. The texture of the canvas gives the print the feeling of a painting, the colours will be much flatter and softer than a fine art or metal print by comparison however many wildlife prints are best suited to this painterly look.  This is also the best option for those selecting a large size print but wish to keep the costs down.  You’ll have the option to choose from a rolled canvas where you take delivery and have it stretched locally, a stretched canvass which wraps around a wooden frame or if you wish it to appear more formal you can frame it.  Canvas also has the advantage of being light weight when compared to the other three media types.

  • Fine Art Prints is the traditional approach with a wooden frame, mat and mounted under glass.  There is a large selection of wooden frames to choose from which allows you to match the decor of your home and office and paper prints exhibit more detail than canvas, especially black and white prints when printed on fiber based papers. This option is however more expensive, heavier and you get a smaller image size for a specific wall space given the frame and mat take up 4-5 inches around the wildlife print.  Depending on your room you may also experience glare and reflections from light.

  • Metal Prints are best for wildlife prints that portray vibrant colors and high contrast. Images that are soft or subtle are not a great choice for metal prints. The high contrast makes any image look bolder and its inherent sharpness brings out detail incredibly well.  Due to the glossy finish of metal, images with bold colours look fantastic when presented on metal.  This is a more expensive option but if you have a modern or contemporary interiors with clean furnishings and polished surface metals are an excellent choice.

  •  Acrylic Prints are also a great option for accentuating high contrast images which will appear detailed and sharp and colours which appear vivid, bright, and seemingly three-dimensional that just come to life.  The downside is that they are heavy, expensive and can exhibit a lot of glare so you really need the right room as placing an acrylic print opposite a bright window or even under harsh lights will serve up reflections which will destroy the viewing experience.

Deciding the Best Option

In the end there is no wrong choice, it all depends on your preferences, your room and your budget.  If you are thinking large and dramatic, your room is prone to glare and you’re on a budget consider canvas.  If you want a frameless option and the lighting in your room can be controlled for glare then metal and acrylic can be an excellent option rendering a 3D look to your wildlife print with colours that pop.  And for classic, traditional looks that will never go out of style a beautifully framed fine art print works well in an appropriate setting like a formal dining room or living room.
